History of Robowiz

2007: the “rookie” PUMABOTS team was formed at Powell Elementary School, and competed in the Ashburn Regional Championship.

2008: renamed upon their move to GBW, ROBOWIZ built on their experience to win the Chantilly Regional Championships to qualify for the 2008 State Championships at James Madison University (JMU).  The team competed against the top performers from over 300 teams that participated across the state, learning about the level and perspective of the competition, as well as FLL’s signature theme of “Gracious Professionalism.”

2009: ROBOWIZ’s seven-member team again qualified for the FLL State Tournament based on their 1st place finish at the Reston Regional Championship – this time going on to be crowned the 2009 Virginia/DC State Championship based on their strong performance in each of the FLL evaluation categories:

Robot Performance: the teams compete with a robot that they have built using Lego pieces and programmed using the Lego NXT block, running missions on a special Championship mat.  ROBOWIZ’s missions scored 1st place in the region and among the Top 5 overall in the state.
Robot Design & Programming: the team presents their mission assessment, strategy, and resulting robot design; this evaluation judges the technical merits of the Mindstorm robot design, the team’s innovativeness, and confirms that the work was their own.
Challenge Topic Research & Presentation: this year’s topic was SMART MOVE (Transportation Alternatives), designed to provoke critical thinking across various Smart Transportation segments.  Top teams were able to apply their concepts to the “community” of their choice.  ROBOWIZ met with Virginia State Delegate Mr. Jim LeMunyon, Fairfax County Department of Transportation Bike Coordinators, and Washington Area Bicycling Association to present their findings and recommendations, and have been asked to continue their involvement with future projects in western Fairfax County.
Teamwork: Encourages the practice of "Gracious Professionalism", an integral part of the ethos of FIRST - it's a way of doing things that encourages high-quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community.

2010: ROBOWIZ was recently invited to represent the United States at the 2010 FLL European Championship (www.smartmoveistanbul.org) in Istanbul, Turkey from April 22-24, 2010 based on their victory and the strength of the team’s overall performance at the Virginia/DC FLL Championship.
